Library Services is currently engaged in a number of open access (OA) publishing agreements. We, in particular, work with Jisc in what are called 'transitional agreements' - these are attempting to move a part of the current subscription spend on journals that all academic libraries follow in the UK into supporting open access publishing instead.

Our staff and students at Cardiff Met benefit from access to excellent resources that underpins their work but often this work is behind paywalls - it is the purpose of the transitional agreements to help change this. The key aim of the OA movement is that anybody should be able to read about research (in this case published as journals articles) that they help to fund as citizens.

You will find details of the publishers we currently have agreements with below - this page will be updated iteratively as new agreements and changes are made. We are working on making more of these agreements available in 2021.

Please contact our Research Librarian (Mark Lester - mlester@cardiffmet.ac.uk) if you have any questions or feedback.

What does it mean for Cardiff Met?

OA publishing can be expensive so we have put in place agreements to help with the costs and administration (it is important to note though that these agreements do not cover other costs that may be associated with publishing such as additional page charges.)

Further details are available in the tabs below but essentially the library will pay what are often termed Article Processing/Publishing Charges (APCs) on behalf of Cardiff Met Staff where they are lead/corresponding author in applicable journals - this will enable OA publishing to happen.

Publishing OA also means staff retain copyright of their own work, students can freely access work (legally) on places like Moodle and the work that people produce at Cardiff Met will remain OA enabling it to reach a wider audience.

Springer

We are part of the Springer Compact agreement in the UK - you can find out more details via the publisher direct. This agreement allows you to publish open access (OA) in a number of journals that are applicable to research areas that Cardiff Met excel at.

The OA landing page from Springer will give you access to the full list of journals that form part of the agreement (there are quite a few...). These are listed in a downloadable link titled 'Hybrid journal list'.

Library Services take care of the administration and APC on your behalf. You will be offered the OA route on acceptance into a participating journal once you enter the publishing process

Wiley (currently until end of June 2021 unless UKRI funded)

We are part of a UK wide agreement with Wiley. You can find out more details via the publisher direct. This agreement allows you to publish open access (OA) in a number of journals that are applicable to research areas that Cardiff Met excel at.

This agreement will be available for all up until the end of June 2021 and then from July it will be restricted to only being available for authors who are part of UKRI funded projects. The agreement should be available again (for everyone to make use of regardless of funding) from January 2022.

The OA landing page from Wiley will give you access to the full list of journals that form part of the agreement - these are listed under the 'How to publish open access' heading.
