Learning Centre redevelopment and enhancements
Learning centres at both Llandaff and Cyncoed have seen a number of improvements over the summer in readiness for the 2016/17 academic year.
from students in February 2016, highlighted the need in particular for
additional out of hours space, more group work space and additional areas for
using personal devices.
Over the last few months, the Learning Centre Operational Group has been working on plans to redevelop and refurnish the entrance of the Learning Centre at Llandaff. As you can see from the pictures work is well under way on the construction of the new ceiling and within the coming weeks, carpeting of the "concourse" area.
Some of the improvements scheduled for completion by the start of term include:
New ceiling and carpeting of the concourse
A new false ceiling and lighting is being fitted along with complete carpeting of the concourse area making this a much more usable, comfortable and relaxing space. This will drastically reduce the level of noise in the area making it a more pleasant space to study. Complimenting the changes will be new furniture with contrasting colours and fabrics to really improve and modernise the space.
New furniture is being purchased for this area. We are working with designers on the look, feel, ambience and type of furnishings that are conducive to the learning experience. The refurbishment will include new study booths, powered workspaces, social and group working areas and desks and benches all with a combination of static technology (PCs / iMACs) and powered sockets and USB charging points. This means students have the flexibility of working with Cardiff Met or personal equipment. We are also looking at the design, colours, textures and fabrics, to complement the space and give it that "WOW" we are looking for.
Extending the Out of Hours Space
From September, the whole of the ground floor will be available out of hours so when the learning centre closes – the shutters will stay up! In addition to refurnishing the concourse area, the ground floor
learning lounge area will also be refurnished too. Here we will be installing additional powered spaces, new sofa's and a mixture of high and low desking/benching all with powered sockets and USB charging points.
Extending into this area will mean more than a 50% increase in out of hours space so not only will there be an increase in workstations, there is a significant increase in group work space, soft seating, individual workspaces and flexible spaces.
Please look at the video for a real 3D view of the new space.
In addition to the improvements at Llandaff this summer, there have been a number at Cyncoed too.
We have improved both the gents, ladies and disabled toilets on the 1st floor of the centre which were in desperate need of renovation. Additional cubicles, urinals and a complete refurbishment has been undertaken over the summer on the conveniences in the IT Suite and at the top of the stairs on the 1st floor of the library.
New Study Spaces
It's been high on our agenda this year to create more individual study, group study and powered workspaces in both learning centres. Come and check out the cosy nook on the ground floor where you can sit, study, relax, learn - in a group or by yourself. You can also charge your mobile device and laptop if you need to as the furniture has power sockets built in.
Refurbished and improved Study Rooms
Create the study space YOU need in our bookable study rooms at Cyncoed which have been updated with new flexible furniture. Study Rooms 1 and 2 now also have video and sound recording. Why not record your interviews and presentations and save direct to your OneDrive?
Book your room now via the study portal.
Extending the Opening Hours of Llandaff and Cyncoed Learning Centres
Following a series of pilots throughout the 15/16 academic year, the learning centres at Cyncoed and Llandaff will be extending their opening hours from 5PM to 7PM every Friday during term time.
Not only will be extending opening hours on a Friday, we will be opening for a number of bank holidays around busier periods in the academic calendar. Keep an eye on the opening hours section on the study portal for latest announcements.
Autorenewals for Books
We know how hard it can be to keep track of all your library loans - so we've taken the pressure off with automatic renewals (we call it "autorenewals"). Books are issued to you for one week and then they'll keep renewing on a weekly basis for up to one year! You'll only have to return them if someone else requests them but we'll email you if that happens.
Extended loan period for IT Laptops
We have removed the renew feature on the laptops but have extended the load period from 1 week to 2 weeks. After each loan period, you will need to bring the laptop to the Technology Support Desk to have it checked before taking it back out if you need it.
