Effective Infographics

Infographics can be a very effective way of presenting and sharing data and ideas, but in order to do so they need to be well designed. This course explores the design principles behind effective infographics and how to create them using Adobe Creative Cloud Express.

Successful completion of the course leads to the Infographic Designer digital badge and certificate.

The course consists of three mandatory live training sessions, that are each 1-hour long and 2-3 hours of additional learning in the form a practical project assessment. Estimated learning time: 5–6 hours.

The course generally runs twice a year, in the Autumn and Spring terms.

Where and how to attend?

Sessions listed as Online (in the Campus column, above) will be held through a Microsoft Teams meeting. A link (URL) to the meeting and joining instructions will be sent after booking on a session. In person sessions will be held in a digital skills training room, see directions to our rooms.

Some sessions will be held in person and online, so ensure you choose your preferred booking type when signing-up. We recommend you attend these in person (if you can) but full support will be provided for those joining online.

There are no formal prerequisites for the course, but you should have a familiarity with using a computer, Office and a web browser.

Most of the content was very valuable to me, the most valuable was the lesson on what makes a good infographic as we were presented with dos and don'ts which helped in the later assessment

Course Structure

The course is comprised of​ three mandatory training sessions, that are 1-hour long and an additional 2-3 hours of learning in the form a practical project assessment.

The first session introduces some of the design principles required to create effective infographics. The Adobe Creative Cloud Express software and the infographics templates it offers are explored.

The second session examines some more design principles required to create effective infographics. We begin a fully worked example that demonstrates the process and considerations around creating an infographic.

The third session explores the final design principles required to create effective infographics. We look at the ways in which Adobe Creative Cloud Express templates can be customised to depict your data and make the design distinct.

The final component of the course is a practical project in which you will design and create an effective infographic.

Estimated amount of learning time:

  • Teaching sessions: 3 hours
  • Practical project assessment: 2 - 3 hours

For a total of between 5 - 6 hours.


Digital Badge Certification

Infographic Designer badge

Successful completion of the course leads to the Infographic Designer digital badge and certificate.

The digital badge is issued by Cardiff Metropolitan University through the Credly platform.

To complete the course and gain the digital badge, learners are required to complete the face-to-face training and pass a practical project assessment. 

Earners of this badge understand the design principles behind effective infographics. They are able to apply those principles to design infographics that clearly and unambiguously present ideas and data. They understand the purpose behind infographics and are able to create informational or promotional graphics. They are able to use software such as Adobe Creative Cloud Express or Illustrator to create their infographics.

Specific Learning Outcomes

​On completion of the course learners are able to:

  • Explain the design principles that are required to create effective infographics.
  • Create infographics that clearly and unambiguously present ideas and data.
  • Use Adobe Creative Cloud Express to combine text, images, logos and graphic design elements.
  • Customise the theme of an Adobe Creative Cloud Express graphic.
