Sign-up: Key Concept Sessions

Key Concept sessions are optional. They explore some of the course material through worked examples and exercises. They are open to all students & staff regardless of whether you enrol on the full course. See a description of each session.

Prerequisites

A good level of general ICT proficiency is required, e.g. ability to manage files, use a web browser. For the Word Expert and Excel Expert courses you should pass the MOS Word and MOS Excel specialist qualifications (respectively) or alternatively have an equivalent level of knowledge and skill.


Cost

The course and exam are free to Cardiff Met students and staff, but places are limited.


Course Overviews

There are three Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert courses and qualifications available. Here is a brief overview of each.


MOS Excel Expert

The Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert course develops competency in creating, managing, and distributing professional spreadsheets for a variety of specialized purposes and situations. The course also prepares learners for the Microsoft Excel Expert (Excel and Excel 2019) exam (MO-201). An individual earning this certification has proven competency at an industry expert-level and can demonstrate the correct application of the principal features of Excel at an expert-level and can complete tasks independently.

Topics include: PivotTables and PivotCharts, macros, collaborating on workbooks, data validation, advanced conditional formatting, logical functions (such as IFS, SUMIFS and NOT), look up functions (e.g. VLOOKUP, INDEX and MATCH), what-if analysis and troubleshooting formulas.

MOS Word Expert

The Microsoft Office Specialist: Word Expert course develops competency in creating and managing professional documents for a variety of specialized purposes and situations. The course also prepares learners for the Microsoft Word Expert (Word and Word 2019) exam (MO-101). An individual earning this certification has proven competency at an industry expert-level and can demonstrate the correct application of the principal features of Word at an expert-level and can complete tasks independently.

Topics include: creating and managing styles, mail merges, QuickParts, managing indexes and table of figures, Word forms and fields, collaboration and macros

MOS Access Expert

The Microsoft Office Specialist: Access Expert course develops competency in database design principles. The course also prepares learners for the Microsoft Access Expert (Access and Access 2019) exam (MO-500). An individual earning this certification has proven competency at an industry expert-level and can demonstrate the correct application of the principal features of Access at an expert-level and can complete tasks independently.

Topics include: creating and modifying tables, working with fields, queries, forms, relationships, primary and foreign keys and reports

Course Structure

To enrol on a course you need to attend an induction session and complete the induction form. The induction explains the nature and structure of the courses and the resources available.

The core of each course is comprehensive video-based LearnKey e-lessons. In addition, the courses include practice questions and exercises and GMetrix practice (mock) exams. The courses can be studied at your own pace.

Each course concludes with the Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert exam: a 50 minute, computer assessed exam in which you have to complete several tasks on realistic spreadsheets, documents or databases. The exams can be taken remotely, from your home.

There will be multiple exam sessions available between 30th November and 18th December 2020, and 11th to 22nd January 2021.

Key Concept Session Details

MOS Excel Expert Key Concept Session: PivotTables

This Excel Expert Key Concept session explores PivotTables, which are a quick and flexible way to create reports on your data. You will learn how to insert PivotTables, "pivot" the data to present it in different ways, format PivotTables, group data and summarise data by different functions.


Certification

Candidates who successfully pass an exam will gain a Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert qualification. You will receive:

  • a physical and digital certificate
  • a digital badge that can be used to share (e.g. on LinkedIn) and verify your achievement
