Guiding principles
As Academic Skills Specialists, our role is to enhance curricula at Cardiff Met by providing specialised academic skills teaching and learning activities. Our goal is to provide innovative, impactful and challenging teaching and associated resources that are overtly aspirational. Indeed, all of our activities are underpinned by these elements:

Whilst we provide students with a considerable amount of practical assistance in developing some of these skills, our work is shaped by a broader context, for it is focused on altering behaviour and developing what we consider to be academic literacies.
Learning and teaching
All of our teaching and learning activities are adapted so that they are contextualised and aligned to assessment requirements. Furthermore, students are required to participate actively in the sessions; experiential learning is used to engage students more effectively and promote deep-level learning.
Our teaching covers a range of topics, including:
Writing in an academic style
Structuring an essay
Constructing an assignment or report
Developing your writing process
Referencing accurately
Adopting criticality
Developing stronger arguments
Common writing mistakes and improving English grammar
Techniques for exam revision
Making effective notes
Preparing presentations
Improving proofreading skills
Formulating research questions
