Welcome to the Technology Support page. Here you will find information on the IT Advisory Support Team, how they work, and also the services they provide from the support desk within the Learning Centres.
There are eight Information Technology Support Advisers within the team and they are expert professionals in ICT and Microsoft products. IT Advisers rotate between sites every couple of weeks which enables them to keep abreast of the typical types of queries raised by students from different schools and the varied requests from staff around the University. IT Advisers, although based with the Learning Centre’s, will leave the Centre to support staff around the campus so numbers available to support you throughout your day may fluctuate between two to five at Llandaff and between two and three at Cyncoed.
We also have a team of IT Assistants that work during the evening and weekends during term time hours. Some of the Assistants also work full time during term and are on hand to assist with your queries and to offer technical support and advice for personal devices.
In each of the Learning Centres we have a Technology Support Desk. Here you will find IT Helpdesk staff who are there to assist and support you throughout your time at Cardiff Met. It's at this desk where you can come with any ICT issues you may have and speak with one of the team.
Should you have problems ranging from connecting to Wi-Fi to advice on purchasing a new laptop - visit the Technology Support desk who have staff on hand to help you. The desk is operational as long as the Learning Centre is open so you can even come to see us on the weekends and evenings during the academic term.
If you are experiencing problems with your laptop, PC or tablet we can look at this free of charge for you - although this does depend on how busy we are. From virus/malware and spyware infections to a complete rebuild of your laptop (providing you have the installation media), we can do this for you for no charge throughout your time at Cardiff Met. Please bear in mind that as this is a free service, it operates on best endeavours basis.
During your study you will encounter a range of problems with ICT. These can range from connecting your laptop or mobile device to the wireless network, printing problems, Microsoft Office queries, password and other access issues, advice on purchasing ICT equipment, faults with your own equipment that may need diagnosing, requesting a loan laptop or perhaps you would like a training session on a particular software product.
Whatever your need, you can visit the Support Desk and speak with one of the IT Advisors who will be able and ready to help you. Don’t forget the IT Suite is open until 21:00 Monday to Thursday and until 19.00 on Friday. On weekends during term time, we are open 11.00 - 17.00 on Saturday and Sunday.

It may often be the case that you will have to leave your device with us at the desk for evening and weekend staff to resolve should the centre be busy.
If you require the use of a laptop we have over 70 at Llandaff and around 40 at Cyncoed which can be loaned from the Technology Support Desk. These are available for a two week long loan which can be renewed as many times as you need it providing there is no reservation for one. These are not available to be renewed online and have to be returned to the Technology Support Desk at the end of each loan period for a brief inspection.
While you are a Cardiff Met student you are eligible to use a limited number of software applications. These include SPSS, NVivo and of course, Microsoft Office. Please visit the Software Downloads page for further information.
Througout your time at Cardiff Met you will no doubt visit and make use of Learning Centre facilities very often. You will also visit the Technology Support desk on many occasions with issues ranging from authentication through to requesting help formatting your dissertations! Whatever the problem, we are here to help you or at least find someone who can.
